What is PM Surya Ghar Yojana and How You Can Apply For It?

Pradhan Manthri Surya Ghar Yojana, simply called as PMSGY, was started in January 2022 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Later it was named as Pradhan Manthri Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana and added a national portal for Rooftop Solar Scheme on 30th July 2022, which aims to install rooftop solar plants in 1 crore households. 

Main aim of this scheme is to decrease dependency on fossil fuels, installation of solar panels, promote free electricity and renewable energy throughout India by which we can save our environment.

This scheme provides 300 units of electricity for free to anyone who installs solar panels in their houses. 

Banks Offering Loans to Install Rooftop Solar:

There are a few banks who offer loans for installing Rooftop Solar Panels for residential and Commercial purposes. The loans provided by banks and their structure are

- State Bank of India provides upto a maximum of 2 lakh rupees for a 3 kW and 6 lakh rupees for a 10 kW rooftop solar plant.

- Union Bank of India provides a maximum of 2 lakh rupees for a 3 kW and 15 lakh rupees for above 3 kW to 25 kW rooftop solar plant.

- Canara Bank provides up to a maximum of 2 lakh rupees for a 3 kW rooftop solar plant.

- Central Bank of India provides up to a maximum of 2 lakh rupees for a 3 kW rooftop solar plant.

- Punjab National Bank provides up to a maximum of 6 lakh rupees for a 10 kW rooftop solar plant.

And there are a lot of banks that offer loan facilities to install rooftop solar plants in houses, commercial spaces and other spaces.

How Much Subsidy Do You Get?

As this is a subsidy program, under PMSGY scheme, central government gives you a subsidy on your rooftop solar plant installation

- A subsidy of 30,000 Rupees will be paid to you if you install 1 kW of rooftop solar plant.

- A subsidy of 18,000 Rupees per kW upto 3 kW will be paid to those who choose more than 2 kW rooftop solar plant.

- A subsidy of maximum 78,000 Rupees will be paid if you install more than 3 kW rooftop solar plant. 

How To Apply for PM Surya Ghar Yojana Scheme?

Eligibility:

- You should be an Indian Resident.

- None of your family members should be a Government Employee.

- Definitely your Aadhar should be linked to your bank account.

- Your annual income should be less than 1.5 lakhs.

If you are able to meet the above criteria, then you can apply for a rooftop solar plant installation before 31st March 2026.

How To Select A Perfect Rooftop Solar Plant for Your Home?

You might be unable to find how much capacity will be suitable for your home. You can find it easily with your current electricity bill.

- If your electricity bill is ranging from 0 to 150 units, then a 1 kW to 2 kW rooftop solar plant will be suitable for your home.

- If your electricity bill is ranging from 150 to 300 units, then a 2 kW to 3 kW rooftop solar plant will be suitable for your home.

- If your electricity bill is more than 300 units, then more than 3 kW solar plant rooftop will be suitable for your home.

Step by Step Process to Apply for PM Surya Ghar Yojana Scheme:

- Go to PM Surya Ghar Website - https://pmsuryaghar.gov.in/ 

- Click on Apply for Rooftop Solar 

- Then tap on the Register button and fill in the details 

- State Name

- District Name

- Electricity Distribution Company/Utility and 

- Consumer Account Number (which can be found in your Electricity Bill).

- Once registration is completed, then your application is reviewed by a concerned DISCOM (Distribution Company) for Technical Feasibility Approval (TFA). Once it is approved, the application is moved to further process

- Once TFR approved, you can sign an agreement with your selected Vendor and proceed further for the installation of rooftop solar plant. 

- After installation, you can apply for a net-metering where DISCOM officials visit your installed plant and approve a net-metering for your plant.

- Then after successful installation of net-metering, you can generate a commissioning certificate from the portal, which is further helpful to claim subsidy from the Central Government under PM Surya Ghar Yojana Scheme.
